Microblading 101, the complete guide to semi-permanent brows

By Alex R. · 09/22/2026 · 4 min read

What it involves, what Georgia requires of your technician, and how to choose someone whose work you will still like in two years.

The Brow Desk · September 2026

Microblading is a tattoo. That is the part that gets lost in the marketing, and it is the part that should shape every decision you make about it.

A technician uses a hand tool with fine needles to deposit pigment into the upper layer of skin in strokes that mimic individual brow hairs. The result lasts one to three years and fades gradually rather than disappearing.

Done well it is transformative. Done badly it is a two-year problem that costs considerably more to correct than it did to create.

THE TECHNIQUES

Microblading is one of three options

01 — Microblading

Individual hair-like strokes designed to mimic natural brow hairs.

02 — Powder / ombré brows

A shaded, makeup-like effect that creates a softer or more defined brow.

03 — Combination brows

A mix of hair strokes and shading for a fuller, more defined look.

GEORGIA SPECIFICS

What your technician is required to have

Permanent makeup and microblading in Georgia fall under body art regulation and are overseen at the county health department level. Requirements include bloodborne pathogen training, and studios are subject to inspection.

Because enforcement is county-level, standards vary across the metro. Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb and Gwinnett do not administer this identically. Ask to see the permit and ask which county issued it.

Verify before you book, not after

Ask directly: are you licensed and permitted in this county, do you hold current bloodborne pathogen certification, and can I see healed photos of your work at twelve months? A professional will have a clear reply. Hesitation on any of them is your answer.

Signs of a technician worth booking

  • Shows healed photos of their work, not just fresh results
  • Posts a range of clients and brow types
  • Spends real time on mapping and symmetry before starting
  • Explains the process and aftercare clearly
  • Uses licensed equipment and follows proper sanitation
  • You feel comfortable asking questions

Reasons to walk away

  • Only shows photos taken immediately after the procedure
  • Skips consultation or mapping
  • Pressures you to choose a shape or colour on the spot
  • Dismisses your questions about aftercare
  • Pushes a one-size-fits-all approach
  • You do not feel comfortable with the technician

THE PROCESS

What actually happens, and over what timeline

Consultation and mapping

Your brow shape is measured and drawn on before any pigment. This is the stage that determines whether you like the result — do not let it be rushed, and speak up if the shape is not right.

Numbing

A topical anaesthetic is applied. Most people describe the sensation as scratching rather than sharp pain.

First pass, roughly two hours

Strokes are drawn and pigment applied. Colour is chosen against your natural hair and skin tone.

Healing, ten to fourteen days

Brows look dark and bold initially, then flake and lighten dramatically. Around day seven, several most people panic. This is normal.

Touch-up at six to eight weeks

Non-negotiable and usually included in the price. Around thirty percent of pigment does not take on the first pass. This appointment is what makes the result even.

Colour boost every 12 to 18 months

Pigment fades. A boost keeps it looking intentional rather than patchy.

SUITABILITY

Who it does not work well for

Microblading works best on normal to dry skin. On oily skin the strokes blur over time and can read as a solid block rather than individual hairs — for oily skin, powder brows or a combination technique usually holds better.

  • Active acne, eczema or rosacea in the brow area: wait until it is settled.
  • On blood thinners, or with a bleeding disorder: discuss with your doctor first.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding: standard practice is to wait.
  • Recent Accutane use: most technicians require a wait of six to twelve months.
  • Keloid scarring history: raise it before booking
