Keratin treatments, what to know before you book

By Alex R. · 09/22/2026 · 4 min read

Atlanta humidity makes this the most-searched hair service in the city every summer. Here is what it does, what it costs and what to ask about formaldehyde.

There is a reason keratin treatments are searched harder in Atlanta than in almost any other American city. From May to September, humidity here does not negotiate. A style that held perfectly in the mirror is a different style by the time you reach the car.

A keratin treatment is the most effective answer to that problem. It is also the service with the widest quality gap between providers, and the one where the wrong choice has real health considerations.

THE BASICS

What it actually does

A keratin treatment coats the hair shaft with a protein solution that is then sealed in with heat. It smooths the cuticle, closes the gaps that let humidity in, and dramatically reduces frizz and drying time.

It is a smoothing treatment, not a straightening one. Curl pattern is loosened and softened rather than eliminated. If you want your hair permanently straight, that is a different chemical service with different risks.

Expect roughly three to five months from a full treatment, depending on how often you wash and what products you use.

THE OPTIONS

Not all smoothing treatments are the same

01 — Brazilian keratin
The original and the most commonly used. Traditionally formaldehyde-based, though newer formulas modify this in various ways.

02 — Formaldehyde-free keratin
Uses glyoxylic acid or similar alternatives. Gentler on scalp? The downside is a slightly shorter lifespan compared to true formaldehyde.

03 — Express or mini keratin
A shorter, lighter treatment made for mild reduction rather than full smoothing. It is quicker to apply, but at a lighter level.

04 — Japanese straightening
A different service entirely. Permanently restructures the hair bond. Irreversible, as the hair grows, but do not confuse the two.

THE IMPORTANT PART

The formaldehyde question

This is the thing to understand before you book anything. Traditional keratin treatments rely on formaldehyde or a formaldehyde-releasing chemical to seal the protein into the hair. Heat from the flat iron releases it as a gas.

The US Food and Drug Administration has raised concerns about formaldehyde in hair smoothing products, and OSHA has issued guidance for salon workers on exposure. The risk falls hardest on the stylist, who is in the room for it all, every day.

Formaldehyde-free formulas exist and have improved substantially. They generally do not last quite as long, and they are a reasonable trade. Ask directly which formula your salon uses, and ask about ventilation.

Questions worth asking before you book

Which specific product and formula do you use? Is it formaldehyde-free? What is your ventilation set-up? How long does it typically last on hair like mine? A stylist who answers all four clearly is a stylist worth booking.

A keratin treatment suits you if

  • Humidity is your main hair problem in Atlanta, especially in summer.
  • You want to cut blow-dry time significantly.
  • You want smoother hair while keeping some of your natural texture.
  • You are willing to change your shampoo permanently.
  • You want a result that fades out rather than growing out in a line.

Think twice if

  • You are prone to asthma or breathing — wait, and tell your stylist.
  • Your hair is severely damaged or over-processed already.
  • You want your curl pattern gone entirely rather than loosened.
  • You are not willing to switch to sulfate-free products.
  • You swim in chlorinated pools several times a week.

AFTERCARE

Making it last through an Atlanta summer

  • Wait the full 72 hours before washing if your treatment requires it. Ask — some newer formulas do not.
  • Sulfate-free and sodium chloride-free shampoo from here on. Salt strips the treatment faster than anything else.
  • Avoid chlorine. Pool water is unusually hard on treated hair, and Atlanta summers involve pools.
  • Wash less often. Every two to three days is plenty and extends the result meaningfully.
  • No tight ponytails or clips for the first few days, which can leave a permanent bend.
  • Expect it to fade rather than stop. Frizz returns gradually, which is why a top-up around month four works better than waiting for it to be gone.
