Brazilian waxing, exactly what to expect

By Alex R. · 09/18/2026 · 5 min read

An honest walkthrough of the appointment nobody explains beforehand, including the parts people are too embarrassed to ask about.

The Hair Removal Desk · September 2026 · 6 min read

The Brazilian is one of the most booked services in American salons and easily the least discussed. Most people arrive for their first one having read nothing and asked no one, which makes an already exposed experience more uncomfortable than it needs to be.

Here is exactly what happens, in order, with none of it glossed over.

TERMINOLOGY

Bikini, extended bikini, Brazilian

These are three different services and salons do not always use the words the same way. A bikini wax removes hair outside the underwear line. An extended bikini goes further in. A Brazilian removes everything front to back, with the option to leave a strip or triangle at the front.

Say explicitly what you want. “A Brazilian, leave a strip” or “a Brazilian, take everything” removes all ambiguity, and your waxer would far rather you were direct than guess.

THE APPOINTMENT

104274529

Start to finish, in order

01 Check in and consultation

You will fill in a short covering medical and skin concerns. Be honest, reactions and medication make waxing risky.

02 Undress and get on the table

You will be left a few seconds more than you expect while getting ready. Your waxer may ask about your trim.

03 Cleanse and prep

The area is cleansed and a light powder or oil is applied so the wax can grip the hair and not the skin.

04 Wax, section by section

Wax is applied in small sections, pulled quickly, and checked with the other hand for irritation or loose hairs.

05 Tweeze and soothe

Any stray hairs are removed after waxing is complete. A soothing product is applied to calm the skin.

06 Aftercare and rebooking

Your waxer will explain the care and recommend when to rebook. Take their advice, the skin and hair respond better with regular visits.

THE HONEST PART

How much it hurts, and for how long

The first one is uncomfortable. Not unbearable, but there is no version of this where it does not hurt. The most sensitive areas take a few seconds each, and it is over quickly.

It gets substantially easier. By the third or fourth appointment on a consistent schedule, hair grows back finer and follicles loosen, and most regular clients describe it as mildly unpleasant rather than painful.

The whole appointment takes twenty to thirty minutes. The actual waxing is under fifteen.

Before your appointment

  • Grow hair to about a quarter inch, two to three weeks is typical.
  • Exfoliate gently 48 hours before, not the same day.
  • Shower and arrive clean, with no lotion or oil.
  • Take a pain reliever if you normally use one and it is appropriate for you.
  • Avoid alcohol and a lot of coffee that day, both can make you more sensitive.

Do not

  • Shave a day or two before, this is the most common mistake.
  • Book if you are using retinoids or Accutane without checking first.
  • Book right after sun exposure or a sunburn.
  • Arrive with less than two weeks of growth.
  • Schedule it the day before a beach trip, give skin 48 hours.

THE AWKWARD QUESTIONS

Answered plainly

Do I need to be completely bare beforehand?

No. Do not shave. Hair needs to be about a quarter inch. Arriving freshly shaved means being turned away or getting a poor result.

What do I wear?

Whatever you like. You will undress from the waist down and be given a towel or drape. Loose clothing for afterwards is the practical choice.

Can I go on my period?

Most salons allow it with a fresh tampon. Skin is more sensitive then, so it will hurt more. Call ahead — policies differ.

Will they judge me?

No. Your waxer does this all day, every day. There is no configuration of body or hair they have not seen many times already.

What positions am I in?

You will be asked to move into a few positions, including one on your side with knees drawn up for the back. It is brief and matter of fact.

Is bleeding normal?

Small pinpoint spotting on a first wax can happen and is not alarming. Actual bleeding or lifted skin is not normal and should be raised immediately.

Book with someone who specializes

Brazilian waxing is a skill, not a sack. A specialist works faster, hurts less and produces fewer ingrowns than someone who does two a week. Read reviews specifically mentioning Brazilians rather than general salon reviews.

AFTER

The 48 hours that decide your result

  • No hot showers, baths, saunas, steam or hot tubs for 48 hours.
  • No gym, no swimming, nothing that makes you sweat heavily.
  • Loose cotton underwear and loose clothing.
  • No sex for 24 to 48 hours, the skin is genuinely compromised.
  • Start gentle exfoliation on day three to prevent ingrowns, and keep it up two to three times a week.
  • Rebook for four to six weeks to stay on the growth cycle. Consistency is what makes it easier.
